Shadow Puppets!!

Shadow puppetry has been around for thousands of years and originated in China and India. In America, we often use our hands to portray different shapes and animals, but it is different across other cultures. In China, there are shadow shows depicting folk tales and legends of the past. In Indonesia, shadow plays are an essential part of their culture. Traditional shadow puppets are also different than ours in America. Here, children often use their hands to make different shapes. However, in many other cultures, shadow puppetry are works of art. They are usually built out of leather and are created carefully. Below I have inserted some examples of these shadow puppets.

One aspect of shadow puppets that I found very interesting was how they require both light and shadow. I found this relevant to our reading because of this. Light is necessary because the puppets are places between light and a screen to create these shadows. Without light, these shadows would not exist.

Heat and Cold

When we talked about heat and cold in class, I found it interesting how there are so many different interpretations and metaphors for heat and cold. One particular example of these that I found particularly interesting was the difference between “cool” and “cold.” In reality, there is not too big of a difference between these temperatures. However, I know that I would much rather be called cool than cold. “Cool” can be described as someone real. They are not afraid to be themselves and do not care what others think. I would take being called “cool” as a compliment. Being called “cold,” on the other hand, is an insult. If you are “cold,” you can be described as having no emotions or heartless. It is so amazing that temperatures that many not differ too differently can connotate completely different things.

Element associations

This post is kinda going to be a combination post for heat and cold and light and shadow, and honestly all the elements and topics we talked about so far. I know that sounds really excessive, but I mostly just wanted to touch on how we always associate certain things to certain elements. For hot and cold, or fire and ice, for example, we can see a clear difference in not only how the elements are but how there represented in life and used in our daily lives. To elaborate we tend to associate fire and heat with things like anger as we refer to people as “hot headed” when we mean they’re quick to temper and with ice, we think of detachedness and solidarity. Those who are labeled “cold” have a reputation for being outsiders or not inviting. This is seen in all the elements like how earth is associated with stubbornness and air is associated with people who just go with the flow and aren’t held to any one thing.

The same can be seen in light and shadow. Normally you associate shadows with distrust or being secretive as things can easily been hidden in the shadows. On the opposite side with light we tend to associate it with truthfulness and being good. Throughout many different religions, including christianity, many of the deities that represent goodness are surrounded by light while those who are suppose to represent evilness are shrouded in darkness
