Sun and Moon

Forever you shall be the sun and I shall be the moon,

Singing the same song in different tunes.

You shall shine and and be the bringer of life,

While I’ll reflect you in the darkness of strife.

You shall lead a life front and center for the world to admire,

While I’ll stay back and watch over them as they retire.

You are a constant you never disappear,

While I gradually go away but always reappear.

You shine alone, the only star of the day,

While I stand with the others who come out to play.

You shall have others orbit you from near and far

While I orbit one for I am not the star.

I have my shadow, you have your light

I am only a reminder you will be back after night.

The Paintings of the Night

The depiction of the night in paintings provides an interesting insight into how different artists approach the same idea. Van Gogh, for example, created one of his paintings, “Cafe Terrace,” which is taking place at night, without the use of the color black. Instead, he uses shades of blue, violet, and green, and surrounds those shades with greens and yellows in order to create a sense of illumination. It is also interesting to note that Van Gogh created his artwork at night in order to get an accurate depiction of how he saw it.

Another artist, Sandy Gellis, used the technique of observation to paint the night by observing the night through the window of an airplane. This unique perspective allowed Gellis to create a unique piece of artwork, and depict a scene that many people have seen, but often don’t pay detailed attention to.

“The Night Watch,” a piece by Rembrandt, uses aspects of shadow, light, and night in order to depict a military group in a portrait form. The irony in this piece is that although the piece mentions night in its title and seems to represent a scene of the night in its appearance, it is actually a day time scene.

It is interesting to see how artists commonly do not paint night in just shades of black and grey, as we normally would picture it. Rather, artists often paint scenes of the night with an aspect of illumination that present night in a way that may not be immediately familiar to us, but in reality is often the way that we see night in our lives. We aren’t often exposed to complete darkness, especially on Long Island, so the way that the artwork is represented may actually be a more accurate portrayal of the night rather than complete black darkness.

Reflection on Night

After our discussion in class today I was thinking about how things can become so much more terrifying at night, especially when you’re trying to sleep. So I don’t know how many people have heard of this but there is a thing called “sleep paralysis” and when you’re trying to wake up sometimes you’re kind of stuck sleeping. I have experienced this a few times and it can get kind of scary. It happens the most when I fall asleep on my back and basically, I wake up but I can’t move, I can’t even open my eyes. It can also get weird because sometimes when someone is stuck in sleep paralysis they can have hallucinations. This has never happened to me, but I know sometimes people hallucinate that there is a demon or creepy creature standing in their room and staring at them which sounds absolutely horrifying. For me, I’ve only experienced hallucinations a couple of times but it is usually just a hallucination of my mom coming into the room asking me if I’m okay (so not scary at all lol). When I wake up, I usually think that actually happened because it seems so real but every time I get up and I’m in the room alone. Typically sleep paralysis is only supposed to last 30 seconds or a minute but for me, I’m usually stuck for a long time. (Although I obviously cannot see the passage of time because my eyes are closed, I once fell asleep while watching TV and when about when I “woke up” Thor 3 came on and I was stuck in sleep paralysis and heard about the first 10 minutes of the movie before I finally was able to get up.) It’s not really scary it’s more frustrating because I want to get up but can’t. I’m glad I’ve never hallucinated a demon or anything because with our discussion on night, I know that seeing something like that in the dark would be beyond terrifying.
